Back in 2014 Disney decided to release their newest live action movie, Maleficent, after the huge success of their first live action remake of Alice in Wonderland. Playing the role of one of Disney’s most famous villains was Angelina Jolie. A brilliant casting choice and absolutely perfect move on their part. Jolie embodied the role and made the movie a huge success. Maleficent went on to make $758.5 million, and to this day it’s the highest grossing movie of Angelina Jolie’s career. So naturally it was more a mater of when not if they were going to make a sequel to the hit movie. We had received the news last year that the sequel was moving forward and was expected to have a May 2020 release. Now things have seem to have taken a turn, as the movies release date has been pushed up!
We already know that Disney has a jam packed movie list this year. There domination of the 2019 box office is about to begin as the release Captain Marvel as well as Dumbo this month alone. Following that we are still getting Avengers: Endgame, Aladdin, The Lion King, Toy Story 4, and Lady and the Tramp on Disney+. So one would think that this jam packed blockbuster schedule would be done, right? If you said yes then you would be wrong because Disney has now decided that they are going to be adding the sequel to Maleficent this year as well. We now know that the sequel will be released on October 18th, 2019. And not only that, the title for the movie has been released as well. Maleficent 2 will now be known as Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.
The title for the movie is absolutely perfect. As we said, Maleficent is one of Disney’s most well known villains of all-time and we all know how evil she is in the original 1959 Sleeping Beauty. While the first movie definitely didn’t show us her full evil potential, with a title like Mistress of Evil, one can hope we will get to see her in full evil, Disney villain form! The official synopsis for the movie states:
“Maleficent: Mistress of Evil continues to explore the complex relationship between the horned fairy and the soon to be Queen, as they form new alliances and face new adversaries in their struggle to protect the moors and the magical creatures that reside within.”
Returning of the sequel is, of course, Angelina Jolie as Maleficent, Elle Fanning as Princess Aurora, and Harris Dickinson (who replaces Brenton Thwaites) is taking on the role of Prince Phillip. Newcomers to the franchise is Michelle Pfeiffer, who will be playing Queen Ingrith, the mother of Prince Phillip. Also joining the cast is Chiwetel Ejiofor and Ed Skrein, but both roles have yet to be announced.
