Sony Pictures has added two names to the upcoming Jumanji sequel being released later this year. While technically the movie is the third film in the Jumanji franchise, it is the second one starring Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Karen Gillan, and Kevin Hart. The movie blew expectations out of the water in 2017 and made close to a billion dollars, raking in a hefty $962 million dollars! So of course Sony wants to move quickly and capitalize on the success the first movie brought.
All four cast members from Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, have been confirmed to reprise their roles in the upcoming movie, but it is the new additions that have caught the attention of many. The first person that has been cast is actress Awkwafina, who’s name probably sounds familiar to you because she stared in two major hits this year. The first movie was Crazy Rich Asians where she stared as Peik Lin Goh, the funny and quirky friend of Constance Wu’s character Rachel Chu. The second role was in Ocean’s 8, which was a huge success and had an all star cast. In the movie Awkwafina played a loudmouthed street hustler and pickpockets named Constance. It is said her role in Jumanji 3 movie is “key and significant” role. She was confirmed to be apart of the cast when Dwayne Johnson posted on Instagram welcoming her to the cast. Her role has not yet been announced and is being kept a mystery.
The second person to join the cast of the Jumanji 3 is Danny DeVito. DeVito is 74 years old and is still working like a young actor. He has a reoccurring role on Only Sunny in Philadelphia which is now on its 13th season. He also has roles in two movies coming out this year, one as the ringmaster Max Medici in Dumbo, the other in The One and Only Ivan. His role was announced by Sony Pictures and as well as Dwayne Johnson saying,
“The magic of ‘Jumanji’ is who becomes who. And the idea of Danny DeVito joining our cast was too irresistible and something we knew we wanted to deliver to our audience this upcoming Christmas. Dwanta Claus loves everyone.”
The idea of Danny Devito in the world of Jumanji along with the already hilarious and crazy cast, can only mean that there is going to be some hilarious interactions between these characters and is going to be great. His role is being kept under lock and key and has not been released.
The cast of Jumanji 3 is getting bigger and funnier. The movie currently is set to do battle with the Star Wars: Episode IX as they are both set for a December 13th, 2019 release date. Whether or not Sony Pictures chooses to keep this date is yet to be determined, but don’t be surprised if the date of the movie gets moved up or even pushed back to an early 2020 release date.
