Finally after 20 years and one not so good sequel that was a prequel to the first film, we now have a true sequel titled “Dumb and Dumber To”. By true sequel I mean the actual Harry and Lloyd characters, played by Jeff Daniels and Jim Carrey. “Dumb and Dumber To” picks up in real time 20 years after we last saw Harry and Lloyd. Lloyd (Carrey) is visited by his best friend Harry (Daniels), who’s been in a mental facility. We learn that Lloyd has actually spent twenty years in the mental facility just to pull a prank on Harry. So if there was any confusion about the title or it’s two characters, that prank makes Lloyd “Dumber”. Harry learns that he has a daughter that he did not know about and with Lloyd the two go on a adventure to find her
When first hearing about “Dumb and Dumber To” and that it’s stars Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels were returning, my concern wasn’t the actors. Regardless of Carrey’s words regarding “the law”, I felt his performances over the years have not disappointed. Same goes for Jeff Daniels and his current TV Show “The Newsroom”. Having these two back alone should be enough to generate interest from those who loved the first film. However, my concern for “Dumb and Dumber To” was Writers/Directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly. Their recent work on films such as The Three Stooges (2012), Movie 43 and Hall Pass were not very good to say the least. I love what the Farrelly brothers did during the mid 90’s to early 00’s, but I cannot ignore the now. But like actors, I feel the brotherly duo directors by going back to what’s familiar to them will bring better results. Having worked with Carrey and Daniels before on the first film, gives them and myself enough confidence for this long overdue sequel.
As for this trailer, just forget how old they are and remember that the film takes place in real time. I’m excited that we are getting these two characters back and after watching the trailer a few times I started laughing a few times more. I loved Harry’s reaction to Lloyd being hot for his hot daughter. I hope the Farrelly brothers have found the magic again for this film.
