Fasten your seat belts and get ready to go on another ride with Baby. After the great success of Edgar Wright‘s Baby Driver (currently in theaters), Sony Pictures is looking into a sequel. Just recently, Wright was asked about the possibility of a follow-up movie, and although he isn’t the type to create these original films while having a sequel in mind, it may be a different story with Baby Driver.
“The studio have asked me to think about writing a sequel and it is one of the ones that I might do a sequel to because I think there’s somewhere more to go with it in terms of the characters. Baby has got to a new place.”
The ending of the movie might’ve suggested that Baby (Ansel Elgort) would have a new partner-in-crime in his love interest Deb (Lily James). Several sites referencing a “Bonnie & Clyde” type sequel with the two characters, which is something I think audiences would be into, especially with Wright returning to write & direct.
As far as what ideas the writer/director has in mind for Baby Driver 2, he offered what approach he would take when writing the story.
“Most sequels you have to contrive something so they go back to square one, unless there’s somewhere deeper for them to go. I think with Baby Driver there’s more that you can do in that realm, and I sort of have an idea that if you did another [film] you would subvert his involvement in the crime in a different way so he’s not the apprentice anymore.”
Baby Driver is a fantastic movie, and one that I cannot wait to see again before its theatrical run ends. It’ll end up being one of the best movies of the year, and thankfully Sony is smart to move quickly on a sequel. While its far from a confirmation, I’m expecting Wright to return along with his two charming leads.
