‘Suicide Squad’: Joker’s “Damaged” Tattoo & Missing Teeth Explained

Okay look, just because I loved Suicide Squad doesn’t mean its perfect movie that deserves a 10 out of 10. It means I had a ton of fun in theaters (especially the 2nd time watching), and could see myself revisiting the film a couple more times when it hits Blu-ray. So with that off my chest, lets talk some more Suicide Squad.

David Ayer revealed something interesting regarding the look of the Joker (Jared Leto). Specifically his “damaged” tattoo across his forehead and the grills in his mouth. Many have speculated that Batman at one point punched out the Joker’s teeth, which would explain the grill. According to Ayer, that fan theory turned out to be accurate. However, nobody could really explain the tattoo on the forehead, which received mixed reactions since the first official image.

During a recent interview, Ayer shed light on the story behind the Joker’s final look for Suicide Squad.

“This is sort of my personal thing and maybe less about a larger connection. But Joker killed Robin and Batman basically smashes his teeth out and locks him up in Arkham Asylum. It’s in the asylum where Joker would have done the ‘damaged’ tattoo as a message to Batman saying, ‘You’ve damaged me. I was so beautiful before and now you’ve destroyed my face.’ That’s where the grill comes from.”

I’ll buy Ayer’s explanation, because only someone as crazy as the Joker would get such a tattoo. And as if the grills in his mouth weren’t enough, the tattoo will always remind Batman of what he’s done, or maybe just how close he came to breaking his one rule.

The two characters will meet again, and I cannot wait to see it happen. Leto is signed on for multiple pictures, and I gotta believe his next appearance will be in Ben Affleck’s directed Batman solo-movie. There, we’ll likely get more screen time from the Joker, including some more of his past run-ins with the Bat.
