No single image did more work for Suicide Squad’s marketing, or generated more argument, than Jared Leto’s Joker with DAMAGED written across his forehead and metal where his teeth should be. This page promised the explanation in 2016. Here it is in full, including the part that only became visible years later: the franchise’s own retreat from the design.
The backstory Ayer built
David Ayer’s Joker is designed around one off-screen event: he murdered Robin, and Batman (the one time the rules broke) beat him nearly to death for it. The missing teeth are from that beating; the grill is the repair; and “Damaged”, inked where everyone must look at it, is the Joker’s own punchline about the encounter. A man who cannot be hurt in any way that matters turns the injury into decoration. Every other tattoo on the body works the same way: the J under the eye, the HAHAHA down the arm and chest reading as laughter he no longer performs otherwise, the jester skull — “a badge of honor at some sick level,” as the production’s own materials framed it.
The crucial caveat, and the reason the searches never stopped: none of this is in the film. Suicide Squad shows the tattoos and explains nothing; the lore lived in Ayer’s interviews, the tattoo-design press tour and the tie-in marketing. The movie shipped the iconography and left the manual at home.
The Robin connection the DCEU half-told
The backstory was engineered to interlock with Batman v Superman, released five months earlier: the Batcave’s glass case holds a Robin suit spray-painted “HAHAHA JOKE’S ON YOU BATMAN”. One event, shown twice: the trophy from Batman’s side, the scar tissue from the Joker’s. The films never named which Robin died or showed the event, and the DCEU ended without cashing the setup, which moves that story into the same category as the unmade films the sequel tracker catalogues: canon by press interview only.
What the design cost, and where it went
The Damaged tattoo became the era’s shorthand for trying too hard, mocked before the film opened, meme-fixed forever after. What the mockery obscured is that the design did its actual job: the 2016 marketing was inescapable, and the look is instantly identifiable a decade later, which is more than most franchise redesigns manage. But the tellingest verdict came from inside the house. When Leto’s Joker returned in Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021), the forehead tattoo had vanished and the grill was gone from prominence — Snyder remade the character without the two most argued-over elements, saying plainly the tattoo wasn’t for him. The franchise’s own final cut sided with the critics.
The questions that travel with this one
The searches that land here usually carry companions: who played Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, hours of prosthetics a day), whether Tom Hardy was really meant to be in the film (yes: he was Rick Flag until The Revenant ran long, and Joel Kinnaman stepped in), what happened to Harley and the Joker’s relationship arc (heavily cut, another manual-not-included casualty).
