A few years ago, I had no clue who the DC Comics villain Deathstroke was. But thanks to an impressive onscreen portrayal of the character (played by Manu Bennett) in CW’s hit TV show Arrow, I now find myself overjoyed at the news of his debut in the DCEU coming soon.
Ben Affleck recently tweeted out some sort-of test footage of Deathstroke, hinting at the character’s possible involvement in Justice League. While many sites (like The Wrap) have gone as far as confirming him as the main villain for the Batman solo movie, and a possible cameo in Justice League, its still unknown if either will be the case. What we do know so far is that Stepphenwolf will be the main villain for Justice League, with possible side villains in a supporting role. As for the Batman solo movie, Affleck confirmed it would be an original story that borrowed from different comic book story lines. Many of the Caped Crusader’s rogue gallery (including Deadshot) have been rumored to make an appearance.
Affleck’s promotion to executive producer on Justice League gives him more influence of the film’s production process. Seeing him more involved in social media with the fans is a real treat. It also speaks of director Zack Snyder taking a back seat on that front, and focusing more on the film itself.
As for Deathstroke, rumors are already popping up online claiming actor Joe Manganiello (Magic Mike) has been cast in the role. The actor previously auditioned for an unspecified role in Suicide Squad, and was recently spotted in the UK, where JL happens to be filming at the moment.
I’m not trying to start any debates here, but for sake of briefing anyone who isn’t familiar with the character of Deathstroke, he’s largely similar to Marvel’s Deadpool. From the expert in marksman and swordsman, to the enhanced physical and mental abilities, like superhuman strength, speed, and endurance, along with manipulation skills and military tactical expertise. He even has a regenerative healing factor.
Fans of the character have much to be excited about, especially with Affleck co-writing and directing his Batman movie. Deathstroke won’t be just a major threat to Batman, as I’m expecting him to have an emotional backstory that’ll make for a strong antagonist.
