Imminent: that was the promise in August 2016 about Deathstroke’s DCEU debut. The announcement was real, the actor cast, the reveal staged by Ben Affleck himself, and the debut never came. This page has since become the file for its whole species: DC’s announced films that evaporated, kept together because their stories are one story.
Deathstroke: cast, teased, stranded
The 2016 beat was unusually concrete for a rumor era: Affleck posted test footage of Deathstroke unprompted, and Joe Manganiello was confirmed as Slade Wilson, villain of the solo Batman film Affleck was to direct, co-write and star in. Then the host film dissolved in stages — Affleck off directing duties in early 2017, Matt Reeves rebooting the project as The Batman, the script discarded — and Manganiello’s fully cast, fully costumed villain was left holding a post-credits scene in Justice League and a slightly longer one in the 2021 Snyder Cut. An actor cast for a franchise arc got, in total, around three minutes of screen time. He has told the story since with good humor and visible regret.
Nightwing: a director, then silence
In early 2017, Warner announced a Nightwing film with Chris McKay directing, a real hire off The Lego Batman Movie, not a rumor. What followed was the purest specimen of development limbo in the modern DC file: no casting, no date, years of McKay gamely confirming in interviews that it was still alive in some form, and then the 2023 reboot of the entire DC film universe, which closed the continuity the film would have inhabited. Nothing was ever cancelled on the record. Nothing was ever made.
Justice League Mortal: the one that got to costumes
The grandfather of DC’s unmade slate deserves its section wherever this ledger lives. In 2007 George Miller (between Mad Max entries) cast an entire Justice League: Armie Hammer’s Batman, Megan Gale’s Wonder Woman, D.J. Cotrona’s Superman, Common’s Green Lantern. Production was set for Australia, costumes were tested, and the film died weeks from cameras under a writers’ strike, a lost Australian tax rebate and a studio that blinked. Miller has explained the collapse candidly in the years since. When searches ask about “the cancelled Justice League movie”, this is the one they mean, a decade before the released Justice League’s own troubles made the title cursed twice over.
Why the ledger keeps them together
Three projects across ten years, and one pattern: announcement treated as existence, then a quiet that no press release ever formalised. It is the same phenomenon the sequel tracker documents film by film — the method is identical, applied here to a studio slate whose ghosts outnumber some studios’ films. The DC projects that did ship carry their own files on this site, from the Batman v Superman budget verdict to the batsuit ranking those films at least got to wear. Deathstroke’s debut, this page can finally report, is not on any schedule at all.
