The biopic on legendary rap icon and social activist Tupac Shakur is finally coming. The film, titled All Eyez On Me, is currently filming in Atlanta, Georgia. The biggest question for this biopic (who will play Pac?) has already been answered. Actor Demetrius Shipp Jr. will portray the late rapper. The cast surrounding Shipp has slowly been coming together. Jamal Woolard will be reprising his role as the late rapper Notorious B.I.G. Woolard first played the role in the ’09 biopic Notorious. Also, R&B singer Keyshia Cole has also been cast as Queen. Today, the biopic has added two more cast members in what I think are very important roles.
According to a report from Variety, actresses Kat Graham and Danai Gurira have signed on the project. Graham will portray Jaka Pinkett Smith, who was a high school classmate and longtime friend of Pac. Gurira will portray Pac’s mother, Afeni Shakur. Both actresses come from very successful TV shows and will no doubt add more talent to an inspiring cast.
As for this biopic, its still raising more concerns than excitement. Personally, I was more looking forward to established directors like Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) and John Singleton (Poetic Justice) taking on this biopic. The current director, Benny Boom, hasn’t directed a film this large in his career. His directing credentials include a couple music videos and low budget, straight to DVD movies. Its too early to predict just how good or bad this biopic could be. The set photos have so far looked good, but this project is fighting an uphill battle, with so much expectations. I’m hoping for the best movie possible to be made, which is all that can be really said right now.
All Eyez on Me is expected to have a 2017 release date.
