We all know that Disney has been on a reboot kick as of late, taking their old movies and rebooting them. Recently we have seen them take their classic animated movies and make them into live action movies. Last year we got Beauty and the Beast, and this year alone we are going to get Dumbo, Aladdin, The Lion King, Lady and the Tramp. We haven’t however seen a lot of reboots from Disney, but really it is and was only a matter of time till that become something they were interested in doing. Recently it was reported that Disney has plans to reboot the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.
Honey, I Shrunk the Kids was a popular 1989 Disney movie that starred Rick Moranis, Marcia Strassman, Matt Frewer, Kristine Sutherland, Robert Oliveri and a handful of other actors. The movie revolved around Rick Moranis’ character Wayne Szalinski who is an inventor and scientist who is on a mission to develop the worlds first shrink ray. In the process Wayne Szalinski accidentally shrinks his kids as well as the next door neighbors kids to a quarter of an inch in size. The story revolves around the adventure of the kids to get back to their father and his invention in order to un-shrink them.
The movie was a hit for Disney back in 1989 and led to two spinoff movies titled Honey, I Blew Up the Kid and Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves. It also spun a TV series titled Honey, I Shrunk the Kids: The TV Series as well as a three dimensional ride at Disneyland titled Honey, I Shrunk the Audience. The franchise hasn’t been used since the television show ended in 2000 and the ride at Disneyland was closed. But now according to reports that will soon change as Disney has plans to bring back the franchise and reboot it.
We know that Disney is planning on making sure that their new streaming service Disney+ is a success and rivals Netflix and Amazon as well as others. We don’t include Hulu anymore because Disney now owns the rights to Hulu making them not a threat anymore. Disney also has plans to use the streaming service as a means of rolling out new content including movies as well as shows exclusive to the Disney+, and it seems that this will be the idea behind the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids reboot.
While the reboot is still in the very early stages of development, there has been reports of how the movie will go about. Apparently the plan for the movie is that it will be a sequel as well as a reboot to the franchise. It will follow Nick Szalinski, the son of Wayne Szalinski, who has followed in his fathers footsteps and become an inventor himself. He creates his own Shrink ray and ends up following in his fathers footsteps by shrinking his own kids. The role of Nick has apparently been offered to Josh Gad, a Disney favorite who of course is known as the voice of Olaf in the Frozen franchise. The movie is tentatively titled Shrunk.
So what do you think movie lovers? Are you ready for a sequel/reboot to the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids franchise? Do you even want a reboot? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
