While he may not be a household name when it comes to the average movie-going audience, he’s one of the most sought out names in Hollywood. For both his producing, writing and directing, Drew Goddard has quietly become one of the most talented filmmakers in the business. With a ridiculous amount of great credits to his name, which includes an Oscar nomination, Goddard has officially landed the story for his next project.
Collider and reporting genius Jeff Sneider have learned that Goddard, who is fresh off a magnificent effort in Bad Times at the El Royale, will adapt Nick Drnaso’s acclaimed graphic novel Sabrina. Here’s a summary of the story of Sabrina thanks to Collider:
“The film follows a man whose girlfriend, Sabrina, goes missing, prompting him to live with his old friend — an Air Force surveillance expert who is dealing with his own failed marriage. After a grisly videotape is anonymously sent to news outlets, Sabrina’s disappearance goes viral. As the 24-hour news cycle and social media take hold of the story, the two men are targeted by vitriolic conspiracy theorists who threaten their sense of the truth and their faith in each other.”
Sure, it does sound like a story that’s been told a time or two before, but it’s the graphic novel element that makes this so enticing. That and the fact that it will, at the moment, be coming from the hand of Goddard. As Sneider’s report states, Goddard is only attached to produce and write the script for the film. That, of course, comes with a hopeful eye to direct it as well. With his previous work for the world to see, it’s hard to see New Regency not wanting him to helm the project.
Drnaso’s book is a recent winner, as it was published in May of last year, where it quickly gained recognition and finished 2018 on multiple “Books of the Year” award lists. Goddard doesn’t have a story like this under his belt, which is exactly why it makes myself and many others very interested and excited to see him at least write a story like this for the big screen. The parameters are endless, and as we’ve seen with Goddard’s work before, he’s not afraid to go somewhere very few films go. If he does in fact direct, it’s the perfect follow-up to quite possibly 2018s most underrated film in Bad Times at the El Royale. Goddard’s filmography is extensive and down right incredible, so if you haven’t seen Bad Times or even glanced at Daredevil on Netflix, here’s the list of major project he’s been and is involved with.
- Staff writer for Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel.
- Staff writer for Alias and Lost.
- Wrote Cloverfield for director Matt Reeves.
- Directorial debut with The Cabin in the Woods; co-wrote with Joss Whedon.
- Executive producer and showrunner of Marvel’s Daredevil Season 1 on Netflix.
- Wrote/adapted The Martian by Andy Weir; earned an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
- Hired to write and direct X-Force; no word yet on film’s status (Disney-Fox merger).
- Wrote, produced and directed Bad Times at the El Royale.
If you didn’t know who Goddard was before reading this article, you definitely do now. More likely than not, you’ve seen something of his from the past, which should get you at least interested in this project. For myself, he’s one of my favorite filmmakers. His approach to everything has always been unique, with that taken to a whole new level with last year’s Bad Times. As you can tell, I can’t stop talking about that film.
While this project is in the very early stages, and Goddard is currently just on as producer and writer, it’s a very strong base to start it off on. I don’t see anyway how he doesn’t direct this, but if he doesn’t, whoever does get hired to do so will have a very clever script in their hands. I look forward to seeing where this one goes. What do you think of this move? Do you know of Goddard? Do you like his work? Are you interested in this story? Have you read it? Let me know down below in the comments section! No other details have been revealed at this time, but we’ll make sure to update this thread as more news is announced.
