Warner Bros. has officially revealed the first official teaser for their upcoming standalone DC project, Joker. CinemaCon is currently going strong out in Las Vegas, where Warner Bros. took to the stage yesterday to tease and reveal new goodies about a number of their films, including Birds of Prey, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and It: Chapter 2. WB has a load of intriguing projects coming to theaters this year, with one of them being their next-in-line comic book movie Joker.
While at the moment, there is no connection to other DC properties currently going, it’s exactly that reason many people are looking forward to it. It was directed by Todd Phillips from The Hangover trilogy and War Dogs, but stars the unbelievable Joaquin Phoenix, who clearly dedicated himself to transforming for this role. The trailer is very specific, with an extremely dark tone of a man who, no matter what he does, is constantly beaten down by the world, resulting in he himself turning violent.
It’s truly a magnificent trailer, which is funny because my immediate reaction was basically a blank stare at the screen as I tried to put together my thoughts on what I just watched. For film fans who have seen them, the film is clearly inspired by some of the great Martin Scorsese films, like Taxi Driver and especially The King of Comedy, which just so happened to star Robert De Niro, which also is featured in this film (briefly in the trailer). It has a very twisted feeling to it, and it leaves me very interested to see what Phillips was able to do with it from a directing standpoint. He is the only question I have going into the film, as we all know Phoenix is going to absolutely crush the role of Arthur.
Check out the teaser trailer below! Don’t forget to head down to the comments to leave all your questions, comments and concerns! I’d love to hear from you all. How did you react to the trailer? Do you like the tone / look? Is Phoenix a good fit or did you want to see Jared Leto’s version from the DCEU? Also starring Zazie Beetz, Marc Maron, Shea Whigham and Brian Tyree Henry, Joker will be released on October 4th.
