20th Century Fox has released the brand new trailer for one of their final X-Men movies, Dark Phoenix. The movie was directed by longtime franchise writer and producer Simon Kinberg, with it being his directorial debut. It adapts the hugely popular story arc from the comics that sees Jean Grey, played by Game of Thrones veteran Sophie Turner, fighting between the lines of good and evil after coming into contact and absorbing a powerful and mysterious force on a rescue mission in space. The movie brings back most of the cast from X-Men: Apocalypse while Jessica Chastain joins as an otherworldly figure manipulating Jean Grey.
This is a very, very interesting situation. Focusing on just the movie and this new trailer, it goes both way for me. The first part of this trailer is still blowing my mind, and not in a good way. It seems they have confirmed, months before it’s out, that Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique will in fact die in the first act of the movie. I understand that trailers these days reveal too much, but this is on another level. Sure, Lawrence has expressed time and time again that she wants out of these movies and has put her time into them longer than expected, but to just spoil her death makes it feel like it’s not even a big deal to the story. It’s not even a twist or surprise anymore, everyone will know and it won’t have an impact. At all. I just don’t understand the kind of approach they’re trying to take. It only adds to the fact that there seems to be no excitement behind this movie, which is quite disappointing.
On the other hand, a big factor in why there’s no excitement behind it could be directly involved with the Disney-Fox deal that’s officially happening. Everyone knows this is the last Fox-backed X-Men project and soon we’ll get a chance to see them strut their stuff inside Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. While there’s always a chance, it’s highly unlikely these actors will reprise their roles in the MCU, which leaves fans just looking over the project and into the future when they eventually come fact-to-face with the characters assembling for Marvel Studios. The movie definitely has a chance at being good, as every movie does, but the road to its release has already been a struggle and unfortunately, they aren’t making it any better for themselves by doing such things as spoiling major character deaths.
Anyway, check out the new trailer below if you haven’t already. More so than ever, head down below and leave your thoughts in the comments section. What did you think of the trailer? Do you think Mystique dies? How mad are you if they just openly spoiled it? Also starring Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Evan Peters, Kinberg’s Dark Phoenix will be released on June 7th.
In DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.
