The next and final entry into 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise, Dark Phoenix, will be hitting theaters this summer and today brought the news that the studio will be dropping a new trailer for the film tomorrow night. Dark Phoenix is directed by longtime producer Simon Kinberg and brings back the majority of the cast from X-Men: Apocalypse while also adding a couple of new faces to the mix. As the title references, Dark Phoenix will adapt the incredibly popular story arc from the comics that was also the core story point in X-Men: The Last Stand.
Dark Phoenix will follow the X-Men as they come face-to-face with the most formidable and powerful foe they’ve ever come up against: one of their own. Following a cosmic interaction that makes her infinitely more powerful, Jean Grey struggles with this entity inside of her, eventually unleashing her powers in ways she can’t contain. With Jean spiraling out of control and potentially unraveling the fabric that hold the X-Men together, they must find a way to unite to not only save Jean, but save the planet from the aliens looking to weaponize this power to rule the galaxy.
Before Disney gets their hands back on the entire superhero library Fox has had for the last two decades, the studio will be doing their best to try and conjure up one last great story in this franchise. Kinberg is definitely an interesting choice to direct. While he’s always been involved in the franchise, switching over from producer or even writer doesn’t always translate. It’s not that the movie looks bad, there just doesn’t seem to be the same kind of excitement as the franchise has had in the past. Is that because of what we’ve seen or possibly because fans are looking ahead to the characters being integrated into the MCU?
As for this new poster released, it’s quite fantastic actually. The coming together of good and evil that’s fused by Sophie Turner’s Jean Grey is beautifully crafted, absolutely beautifully. It actually gets me very excited to see this new trailer they’re going to drop tonight. I liked the first trailer but it felt like it was missing something, so hopefully this new footage throws everything at us that way the excitement begins to improve. While this will be the final X-Men in Fox’s possession, not including New Mutants, the studio seems to be very confident in the final product as its been put in a prime summer date. Hopefully it lives up to the test.
What do you think of the new poster? Does it leave you excited for the new trailer tonight? Did you like the first one? ALso starring Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters and Jessica Chastain, Kinberg’s Dark Phoenix will be released on June 7th.
