Lionsgate Films has debuted the first official trailer for The Kid, a new western from director Vincent D’Onofrio that will a young boy who must go on the run across the American Southwest in a desperate attempt to save his sister from his villainous Uncle, played by Chris Pratt. Along his exhausting journey, he encounters Sheriff Pat Garrett (Ethan Hawke) who is on the hunt for the iconic outlaw Billy the Kid. He then finds himself increasingly entwined in the lives of these two legendary figures while also being forced to choose what kind of man he will become, all while trying to save his family.
I love this trailer. I don’t really know what it is about the trailer, but I was locked in for the entire runtime. First of all, I continue to love the different telling’s of the story between legendary outlaw Billy the Kid and the law, such as Sheriff Pat Garrett. We’ve seen it multiple times over the last couple of decades, and I can’t wait to see what Dane DeHaan does with this character. This is a very rich character and DeHaan is easily one of the most underrated and underused young actors in the business today. Then throwing in the storyline revolving around Chris Pratt and his nephew, it’s definitely a very intriguing plot point that allows for these two stories to intertwine very smoothly.
Could it just be another one of the average westerns that come and go? It’s very possible, but for now, I’m really looking forward to it. The thing that will make it a buy or sell is D’Onofrio. I’ve never seen D’Onofrio behind-the-camera of a film. We’ve seen him in plenty of films, fantastic films, which is why I’m so interested in seeing what he can do as a director. It’s also a bit of fun that he brought over his co-stars from The Magnificent Seven in Hawke and Pratt for another go-around at the Western genre, because that movie was unfortunately just an average take. The potential is definitely there, and hopefully it delivers.
Check out the first official trailer for the new film below, and after doing so, leave all your questions, comments and concerns in the section below! Do you feel the same as me with the trailer? Do you even care about the western genre? How about the cast and story? Also starring Jake Schur and Leila George, D’Onofrio’s The Kid will be released on March 8th.
In this thrilling Western, a young boy, Rio (Jake Schur), is forced to go on the run across the American Southwest in a desperate attempt to save his sister (Leila George) from his villainous uncle (Chris Pratt). Along the way, he encounters Sheriff Pat Garrett (Ethan Hawke), on the hunt for the infamous outlaw Billy the Kid (Dane DeHaan). Rio finds himself increasingly entwined in the lives of these two legendary figures as the cat and mouse game of Billy the Kid’s final year of life plays out. Ultimately Rio is forced to choose which type of man he is going to become, the outlaw or the man of valor, and will use this self-realization in a final act to save his family.
