Take everything you’re about to read with a grain of salt as nothing has been confirmed or become official in any way. A new Star Wars project focusing on Ewan MacGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi after the events of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith has been rumored and speculated for months, even years. It’s been a movie, then a trilogy of movies, then a TV series, then back to a movie. The talk is endless, and while usually it get tiresome with other properties, this one doesn’t because everyone, and I mean everyone, wants this project to happen. But now, while it could very well be taken as what we’ve heard before, a new report/rumor points towards this finally and actually happening.
Star Wars News Net, who has become one of the most reliable, if not the most reliable source when it comes to Star Wars since the new incarnation of the franchise has been here, has released a new “report,” as they’re calling it, pointing towards an Obi-Wan Kenobi project being put into development by the studio, but not for theaters, rather Disney’s all-new streaming service, Disney+, that’s being released this year. Again, as I mentioned above, take this with a grain of salt for now.
If you remember, back in 2017, THR also reported that The Hours director Stephen Daldry would be in charge of developing a film about everyone’s favorite Jedi Master. The report stated that it was in the very early stages and the studio wanted to see where it went as there wasn’t even a script yet. Of course, we now know that it never ended up going anywhere and both the studio and Daldry moved on, from what we know. That was more than likely a result of Disney and Lucasfilm stepping back from pushing property after property following the results of Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Look, there are many arguments pointing in both directions when it comes to everything Obi-Wan Kenobi. The last number of years have been filled with conversations and conversations about whether this should happen, when, how, etc. As someone who follows every move the franchise makes, this will happen one way or another and I’m personally believing this story of it being a limited TV series for Disney+. Why? Disney+ hasn’t even been put online yet and Disney, Marvel and Lucasfilm are already using it to its full potential. It makes complete sense, in whichever way you look at it.
While I personally would much rather see an Ewan McGregor Obi-Wan on the big screen, given a single movie or even a trilogy, I don’t mind the idea of fleshing out his solo adventures in a TV series. There’s so much time from Revenge of the Sith to when we met him in A New Hope that it just makes sense to tell it on the small screen where your playground is seriously endless. Yes, it needs to stay within the rules of the galaxy, but it would be given the chance to tell the story this character without a doubt deserves, especially since SWNN made sure to let everyone know that they’ve heard the script for the project is “GREAT.”
McGregor has continuously expressed how much he would enjoy coming back to the character, which only adds weight to the fact that the studio is trying to find every way possible to make this happen. If this rumor does end up being true, in some way, we could being seeing our favorite Jedi Master wield a lightsaber one more time very soon. What are your thoughts on this news? Do you want to see an Obi-Wan Kenobi TV series? Would you rather see a movie? Why or why not? Stay tuned here for everything in galaxy of Star Wars!
