While February holds two massive animated features in its grasps, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, there’s also two very prominent action movies on the horizon as well. Both Alita: Battle Angel and Cold Pursuit are being released this month, one being the studio blockbuster with dazzling visuals and the other being what seems to be a hard R action movie starring Liam Neeson. Leading up to this moment, each of these movies felt like they were going to be duds, flops if you will, but with decently strong promoting as of late and above average word of mouth from early screenings, these could be first two good live-action movies of 2019.
Now I’ll be honest, I still am not too sure about Cold Pursuit simply because the trailers and marketing haven’t really done anything to sell me yet. Luckily, we’ve seen plenty of good and thrilling movies very similar to this that just has a string of bad luck leading up to its release, with Edge of Tomorrow being the most recent. And obviously, with it being a Liam Neeson action movie, we kind of know what to expect. The only difference this time around compared to the last few years for the gentlemen who once said he was retiring from movies like this one, is that it’s rated R. That could definitely bring a different element to the typical ass-king Neeson we see.
As for Alita, I’m actually surprisingly looking forward to it. And honestly, I don’t know what it is about it. Months ago, I had absolutely no interest in this movie. The trailers felt like it was trying to be something it wasn’t, and with a middle of December release date before its shift, I was just looking forward to seeing a whole lot more other than this. But after 20th Century Fox made the move to push this back, not only did it make me feel like they were learning from test screenings, but it became this movie that I just wanted to have big dumb fun with. I knew that it would blow me away with visuals, I mean you have Robert Rodriguez and James Cameron in its corner, but my expectations started to shift and I just simply wanted to have the most fun I could have with it. And to back that up, I’m actually hearing it’s good, which gets me even more excited as I was able to grab early screening tickets to it next week.
To help its marketing and hopefully get some more butts in the seat, a brand new clip for each of them have been released, each teasing an intriguing sequence in the movie. If you are more hesitant towards watching both of these, hopefully these new clips will get you at least a bit more interested in what they are offering. Alita: Battle Angel hits theaters on February 14th and Cold Pursuit arrives the week prior on February 8th.
