The Fast & Furious is one of the most beloved franchises in movies in the last 20 years. Ya, you read that right 20 years. The first film in the franchise was released in 2001 and has since produced 8 total films spanning 2001-2019. Of course all the movies haven’t been box office hits, and of course the untimely death of the Paul Walker also have given the franchise its share of down moments. Regardless of both, the franchise still manage to make money at the domestic box office while doing even better in the foreign market.
We know the next film in the franchise will be a spin-off film titled Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw and will follow the characters of Luke Hobbs played by Dwayne Johnson and Deckard Shaw played by Jason Statham. The two have given a new version of the series that has become popular and almost kind of taken the pressure off of filling Paul Walkers role since his relationship with Vin Diesel was what people enjoyed about the story. While we may never get what we got again when it comes to Vin Diesel and Paul Walker, Jason Statham and Dwayne Johnson look to start the spin-offs strong with their movie this year. But don’t think that they are the only ones taking on the spin-offs.
We have now gotten confirmation from the Fast & Furious leader himself, Vin Diesel that there are now plans for a female lead Fast & Furious spin-off. None of the previous Fast & Furious have had female leads, but they have definitely had strong female supporting roles. We have gotten amazing performances from female characters in the franchise like Michelle Rodriguez as Letty or Jordana Brewster as Mia Toretto, but now it is time for the ladies to take the leads. While nothing has been announced officially by a studio, like we said Vin Diesel was the one to announce it saying:
“As you know, there are three new spin offs that We have promised Universal… well this week we heard a pitch for the Fast female protagonist driven spinoff I created in 2017, and you can tell by the smile on Samantha’s face it was VERY exciting. Shout out to Nicole Perlman, Lindsey Beer, Geneva Robertson-Dworet. Welcome to the Fast FAMILY…”
The names of the women at the end of Diesel’s quote are all writers with pretty heavy resumes. Nicole Perlman was one of the writers for the original Guardians of the Galaxy and also helped write the upcoming Captain Marvel movie. Lindsey Beer has credit for writing for 2018’s Sierra Burgess is a Loser and is attached to up and coming projects like the film adaptation of Patrick Rothfuss’ The Kingkiller Chronicles and the reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. While Geneva Roberston-Dworet is a credited screenwriter for Captain Marvel and helped write for for the latest Tomb Raider movie.
It is still in the very early beginning stages of development, so there hasn’t been any details about who may star in the movie or what the story may be about but I know I wouldn’t mind seeing the return of Michelle Rodriguez or Jordana Brewster. But what do you think? Are you excited for a female lead Fast & Furious movie? Who would you want to be in it? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
