At the end of this week, Netflix will drop a new post-apocalyptic sci-fi film called IO, which comes from director Jonathan Helpert. It stars The Leftovers‘ Margaret Qualley as a young scientist who is dedicated to find a new way for humans to adapt and survive on a post-cataclysmic Earth. But when she comes into contact with another survivor (played by Anthony Mackie), her determination to stay is tested and she must decide whether or not to join him in getting on the final shuttle to leaving the planet or to stay and fight for its survival.
While I love me some sci-fi stories, this one definitely feels very similar to films we’ve seen in the past. Not to say it won’t be enjoyable, because most Netflix Original Films are, but it could easily find an audience and very quickly when it’s released in just a couple days. Netflix movies over the last year have become extremely popular and with a well-known star like Anthony Mackie co-leading the project, IO could at the least, be just another enjoyable sci-fi flick to pop on in any given day.
What did you think of the trailer? Did it interest you right away or is it something you’ll get to eventually? Also starring Danny Huston, Helpert’s IO will be released on Netflix this Friday on January 18th.
