We all know that Disney has been cramming out their live action adaptations like crazy. Most of them are well received like Cinderella, while others become classics in their own rights like 2017’s Beauty and the Beast or 2016’s The Jungle Book. And Disney doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon as 2019 will see the recreations of Dumbo, Aladdin, The Lion King, and reportedly The Lady and the Tramp is scheduled to be released on the Disney+ streaming service. Disney has also already stated that they have future plans for Mulan (2020), Lilo and Stitch, and The Little Mermaid. But now it seems that you can definitely add another one to the list because rumor has it that Disney is trying to get Tom Hanks to take on the role of Geppetto in the live action remake of Pinocchio.
For those few of you that don’t know the history of Pinocchio, the story is based on the children’s novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Italian writer Carlo Collodi. Disney then adapted the story in 1940 into the Disney classic Pinocchio. This told the story of Geppetto who is a carpenter that always wanted a son so he carved a puppet out of wood which was then brought to life by a fairy. Pinocchio then befriends his “conscience”, a cricket named Jiminy Cricket. He then embarks on a wild adventure which tests him and proves that he is indeed worthy of being a “real boy.” What Pinocchio is most known for is when he tells a lie his nose grows bigger and bigger every time he tells a lie.
While the movie is in the very early stages of development, Disney doesn’t seem to want to waist any time as they have already approached Tom Hanks to play Pinocchio’s creator/father Geppetto. No confirmation has been made that he will indeed play the character but along with casting for the movie, Disney seems to have locked in on who they want to direct the movie as Paul King has been tapped to bring the character to life. King is known for his directing of the successful Paddington movies, while Andrew Miano and Chris Weitz will be serving as producers. All three have contributed to the current screenplay for Pinocchio and it is assumed like most of the other live action remakes, will follow the same general premise of the original movie while incorporating new aspects as well. Production on the movie is slated to begin in the summer of 2019.
