The first official trailer has been released for the upcoming WWE movie Fighting With My Family, which has been written and directed by Stephen Merchant (The Office) and more importantly, produced by WWE legend himself Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Based on a real life story, Fighting With My Family follows a sister and brother as they try to make their lifelong dream come true: performing in the WWE. Saraya (Florence Pugh) and Zak (Jack Lowden) soon discover that not only does the sport require more than they ever thought, but it will test their relationship as siblings as well.
I’m extremely intrigued by this movie. For one, it truly looks like a great comedy movie. I’m not saying it looks like a straight up comedy, but it has comedy beats that I like personally as a viewer. That mainly comes from the brilliant mind of Stephen Merchant. Known for his many fantastic supporting roles on TV, as Caliban in James Mangold’s Logan, and more recently The Girl in the Spider’s Web, he has plenty of writing credits to his name that give me confidence in the funny side of this movie. Although he does have tons of directing credits to his name, directing a movie is typically a different story. But Merchant has one thing on his side that many director’s in this kind of situation don’t have: Dwayne Johnson.
Johnson is a force when it comes to producing. The amount of things he does with multiple teams is second to none in the business today. While it doesn’t usually have to do with directing projects since many of his movies are large budgets with good size names attached, this is a WWE movie. As the trailers makes sure everyone knows, it’s produced by Johnson, meaning he had a big part in it overall. It would be foolish for Merchant to not talk to Johnson on a daily basis about the script or certain scenes. And it certainly seems like that was the case as I thoroughly enjoyed the trailer. I can also say I’m very, very happy that they didn’t just shoehorn Johnson to the front of the movie since he’s producing and about WWE, rather using him very smartly in a supporting role that will still have an impact on the characters and story.
Check out the first trailer for the movie below, and make sure to leave your thoughts in the comments section as well! What did you think of the trailer? Does it look like something you’d be interested in seeing? Also starring Vince Vaughn, Lena Headey and Nick Frost, Fighting With My Family will hit theaters in February 2019.
Reformed gangster and former wrestler Ricky, his wife Julia, daughter Saraya and son Zak make a living performing in tiny venues across the country.
