One of the most beloved animated franchises of all time just dropped a teaser trailer and poster giving us our first glimpse of the 4th and potentially final film in the Toy Story franchise. Toy Story 4 is the long awaited follow up to the 2010 box office success Toy Story 3, which made us fall in love all over again with our favorite toys, only to break our hearts in the end when Andy decides to give his toys to a new child Bonnie. While many thought and felt that this was the end of the story we have grown to love, Disney/Pixar and especially Toy Story 4 director Josh Cooley, “every ending is a new beginning.”
It has long been speculated that the plot for Toy Story 4 would revolve around Woody longing to find his toy partner Bo Peep and the toys setting off on an adventure to find her. While this may still play a part in the story as Annie Potts is created as returning to her role as Bo Peep, it doesn’t seem like this will be the main focus of the movie. The official synopsis is:
“Woody has always been confident about his place in the world and that his priority is taking care of his kid, whether that’s Andy or Bonnie. But when Bonnie adds a reluctant new toy called “Forky” to her room, a road trip adventure alongside old and new friends will show Woody how big the world can be for a toy.”
Director Josh Cooley went into a little bit more detail explaining the movie and giving us what seems to be a glimpse into what the plot may also revolve around saying:
“The world of Toy Story is built upon the idea that everything in the world has a purpose. A toy’s purpose is to be there for its child. But what about toys that are made out of other objects? Forky is a toy that Bonnie made out of a disposable spork, so he’s facing a crisis. He wants to fulfill his purpose as a spork, but now has a new toy purpose thrust upon him.”
So from what we can grab out of that, the story may revolve around this new character Forky and the crisis of fulfilling his purpose in life and what happens when that purpose changes. Pretty deep stuff right! Toy Story has never been one to shy away from having a deep meaning behind their stories as we have seen from the previous movies. In the original Toy Story we found Woody struggling with feeling replaced and Buzz’s identity crisis, Toy Story 2 gave us Jessie who was struggling with abandonment issues, and in Toy Story 3 we got the message of adulthood and having to grow up. So with what looks like Toy Story 4 having a lot to do with Forky and his struggles accepting who he is, we may be getting another heart wrenching movie.
While we don’t get much in the teaser trailer other than a glimpse of all our favorite toys like Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz (Tim Allen), Jessie (Joan Cusak), Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head (Don Rickles and Estelle Harris), Rex (Wallace Shawn), Hamm (John Ratzenberger), the Alien (Jeff Pidgeon), and Slinky Dog (Blake Clark), holding hands in a circle seeming all happy until the very end when we meet Forky (Tony Hale) who freaks out exclaiming “I’m not a toy!”
Again, the trailer doesn’t really go into much detail at all, other that us meeting Forky and the little freak out that he has knowing that he isn’t a toy. The official poster on the other hand, definitely gives you the feeling that it will be a Woody led movie and with what we have heard from Tom Hanks and Tim Allen about how they both couldn’t get through the end of the movie without crying, you can bet that this journey that Woody is about to go on is one that is really going to hit us all in the heart. While it may seem far away the movie is only about 8 months away with a June 21st, 2019 release date.
