Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio are two of the best in their crafts. When each of them either make a film or grace the screen, it instantly becomes a film that has to be watched. It becomes something completely different when they come together to work, which they have five previous times. After months of years of speculation and “being attached,” it has finally become official that Scorsese and DiCaprio are responsible for the adaptation of David Grann’s book Killers of the Flower Moon.
The duo have been circling the project for some time now, with DiCaprio himself attached to the project dating back to 2016 where J.J. Abrams was in-line to direct. The true crime thriller takes place in the 1920s and recounts how a string a murders against members of the Osage Nation in Oklahoma over oil became one of the FBI’s first major homicide investigations. Details haven’t been released yet and I personally don’t know anything about the book story, but one would imagine DiCaprio will play the lead FBI Investigator on the case.
headline broken the news, which also revealed that Eric Roth wrote the script for the project. Roth has an extremely powerful resume to his name, which includes titles like Forest Gump, The Insider, Munich, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and this year’s A Star Is Born (co-wrote with Bradley Cooper). Scorsese and DiCaprio will both produce the film, with the former having this to say about bringing the story to life:
“When I read David Grann’s book, I immediately started seeing it—the people, the settings, the action—and I knew that I had to make it into a movie,” said Scorsese. “I’m so excited to be working with Eric Roth and reuniting with Leo DiCaprio to bring this truly unsettling American story to the screen.”
Both men are extremely busy at the moment with respective projects, but once they wrap up their current duties, they will get right to work on the project next summer. As I mentioned earlier, whenever these two juggernauts get together, it’s a must watch. With the book and eventual film based off of true events in a part of the country that is rarely used as a story setting, this could end being a very unique film that screams awards, and not just because it’s a Scorsese directed film starring Mr. DiCaprio. Although, that definitely does help.
What do you think of this news? Have you been keeping up on this project? Are you excited Scorsese and DiCaprio are teaming up once again for this story? Who else would you want to see cast alongside Leo? With a Summer 2019 production start and Scorsese typically taking up to a year to edit his films, expect to see Killer of the Flower Moon in Fall 2020.
