Rian Johnson is a one-of-a-kind filmmaker. No matter how small or big the property is, he sticks to who he is as a director. I mean, look at the controversy that has and always will surround Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The Last Jedi is by far the biggest title Johnson has to his credit to date, and while the movie was a complete success (screw those nagging fanboys and their dong takes), Johnson is taking a step back to tell a much smaller, much more personal story with Knives Out. The film already features an outstanding cast that’s led by Daniel Craig, Chris Evans and Lakeith Stanfield. Each name added to the film has been crazy exciting, but it’s its most recent addition that has everyone buzzing even harder.
Per Variety, it’s been announced that Jaime Lee Curtis (Halloween) has joined the already stellar cast for Johnson’s new murder mystery. Curtis can currently be seen in the now official sequel Halloween, which is currently destroying box-office numbers and expectations in theaters. Curtis has always been a strong actress, but after a little bit of a hiatus, she has made a small resurgence with her performance in Halloween being the icing on the cake.
I never thought I’d feel this way about Curtis joining the project, but I think it’s more about her joining the names that are already on the list. Johnson is a specific kind of director, one that many actors and actresses want to work with because it’s not just a paycheck movie, rather a story and characters that have actual meaning and depth to them. If you don’t believe me, watch Brick and Looper, Johnson’s first two films that easily one him the job of directing a Star Wars movie. It’s unknown how big of a role Curtis will play, but with an ensemble like this one, I expect the film to include a number of different important characters that will allow each of these actors to dig their teeth into.
What do you think of the casting? Is this one of the best casts of the year? Are you looking forward to seeing Johnson return to a project like this? With production expected to start next month, Knives Out could (hopefully) see a release some time in the Fall or Winter of 2019. The film also stars Michael Shannon, Ana de Armas and Don Johnson.
