Annapurna Pictures has finally released the first official trailer for their upcoming film Destroyer. The crime drama is directed by Karyn Kusama (The Invitation) and stars Nicole Kidman as LAPD Detective Erin Bell who, as a young cop, was put undercover in a lethal gang that ultimately ended in tragedy. But when the leader re-appears years after the events that destroyed her life, she must find a way to work back through the gang and reach through her own past to reckon with the demons of her past.
I can’t freaking wait for this film. Not only am I absolutely hooked following this trailer, but from those who have seen it at festivals throughout the year have done nothing but been raving about Kidman’s performance in a role that is substantially different from what she’s been seen in over the last number of years. The word that stands out the most is “captivating,” which in film and performances, is a seriously big word.
Now, of course, I do have hesitancies as I do with every film. Will the story hold up? Can the movie keep me interested outside of Kidman? Only time will tell, but for now, I’m completely in on it. I’ve personally been really enjoying these gritty and grounded female led stories over the last few years, and Destroyer definitely looks like it has the chance to rank among the best. Now the question for me is whether or not I’ll be able to see it. I’m crossing my fingers it show up in my area when the time comes, but the truth is, I don’t always get these type of titles. But quite honestly, after this trailer, I’d be willing to drive a decent amount of time just to get the chance to see it in a theater.
Check out the first official trailer below, and please make sure to leave your thoughts in the comments! How did you like the trailer? Was it Kidman or the movie that got you interested? Will you get a chance to see it in your area? Also starring Toby Kebbell, Sebastian Stan, Tatiana Maslany, Scoot McNairy and Bradley Whitford, Kusama’s Destroyer will be given a wide release in January, 2019.
Destroyer follows the moral and existential odyssey of LAPD detective Erin Bell who, as a young cop, was placed undercover with a gang in the California desert with tragic results. When the leader of that gang re-emerges many years later, she must work her way back through the remaining members and into her own history with them to finally reckon with the demons that destroyed her past.
