Fox Searchlight Pictures has unveiled the first trailer for their upcoming period piece The Aftermath. The film, which is directed by James Kent (Testament of Youth), is set in postwar Germany in the year 1946. Rachel Morgan, played by Keira Knightley, arrives in what is now the ruins of Hamburg to meet her husband (Jason Clarke) following the war. As they set off to their new home, Rachel is stunned to learn that they will be sharing their grand house with its previous owners, a German Widower (Alexander Skarsgard) and his troubled daughter. This atmosphere eventually leads to a story of passion and betrayal.
I don’t know how many times I’ve said it, I love war films. It doesn’t matter which war, setting, genre; a war films will instantly suck me in until I figure out whether or not I like it. Basing this movie off just its trailer, I could really end up enjoying myself when it finally hits theaters. I don’t care what anyone says, Keira Knightley has always been one of my favorite actresses. It may be because of my age, but I think she’s incredibly powerful and underrated, especially recently. We don’t see much of her anymore, but that’s not a bad thing because it means she’s picking specific roles, and it’s working.
As for the story itself, it looks pretty riveting and somewhat thrilling at times. Because of the backdrop the film is set in, the idea of a British woman getting together with a German man was the biggest controversy anyone could think of at that time. And because its Knightley and Skarsgard playing those characters, I couldn’t be more in at this point. The your throw in Jason Clarke as her husband and for me, it instantly becomes a must-see. I also can’t finish this without noting that director James Kent has directed an incredibly underrated war film from a few years that starred now Oscar winner Alicia Vikander and Kit Harrington. It was nowhere as scandalous, but captured the setting extremely well, something that has gotten me even more excited to see what he can do with this material.
Watch the first official trailer below, and please leave your thoughts in the comments below! What was your initial reaction to the trailer? Do you feel the same as me when it comes to Knightley? How do you like the supporting cast? Kent’s The Aftermath will be released on April 26th, 2019.

But as they set off for their new home, Rachael is stunned to discover that Lewis has made an unexpected decision: They will be sharing the grand house with its previous owners, a German widower (Alexander Skarsgård) and his troubled daughter. In this charged atmosphere, enmity and grief give way to passion and betrayal.
