First ‘Pet Sematary’ Trailer Teases a Chilling New Take on Stephen King’s Iconic Story

Just as promised, Paramount Pictures has released the first official trailer for their Pet Sematary remake. The highly-anticipated modern adaptation of the popular Stephen King tale is directed by Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer (Starry Eyes) and will follow Dr. Louis Creed (Jason Clarke) who discovers a mysterious burial ground hidden deep within the woods near his family’s new home in the outskirts on Maine. But when a tragedy happens, Creed seeks out his unusual neighbor Jud Crandall, played by John Lithgow, which evidently sets off a chain reaction that unleashes an unsettling evil with terrifying consequences.

King’s story has been popular from the moment it was brought to everyones attention in 1983. Considered to be an iconic piece of horror literature, it was followed by a movie adaptation in 1988 that still remains horror favorite to this day. But, it’s the perfect material for a modern-day remake.

While many first trailers are deemed “teaser trailers,” this is far from that. There’s a lot to dive into here, and while many hardcore fans will be able to dissect the film second-by-second, I can only judge it from what I see on the surface. It looks fantastic, it really does. It definitely felt like it kept a lot off the table as I’m still questioning what I saw, but then I thought to myself, this is exactly how I felt after watching the first trailer for A Quiet Place. Then I thought again, Paramount did that too! It’s obviously not a guarantee that it will be a massive, but that bodes very well for this film. I’m not familiar with the directors work, but I’m very interested in seeing where they take this story and whether or not it can be a horror film that stands apart from the everyday jump scare story.

Take a look at the first trailer below, and make sure to head down to the comments to leave your thoughts! Have you read the book? Do you like the original movie? How does this trailer fair with you? Does it feel like the adaptation this story deserves? Also starring Amy Seimetz, Kölsch and Widmyer’s Pet Sematary rises into theaters on April 5th, 2019.

Based on the seminal horror novel by Stephen King, Pet Sematary follows Dr. Louis Creed (Jason Clarke), who, after relocating with his wife Rachel (Amy Seimetz) and their two young children from Boston to rural Maine, discovers a mysterious burial ground hidden deep in the woods near the family’s new home. When tragedy strikes, Louis turns to his unusual neighbor, Jud Crandall (John Lithgow), setting off a perilous chain reaction that unleashes an unfathomable evil with horrific consequences.
