We know that Disney is in the midst of remaking a lot of their classic movies and a lot of people are enjoying the remakes that are coming from Disney Studios. We have already seen remakes of Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent, Cinderella, Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast and Christopher Robin. While some movies have been received better than others, Beauty and the Beast especially, Disney has a lot of movies already green lit and those include Dumbo, Aladdin, The Lion King, Lady and the Tramp, and Mulan.
While there are other movies in the works and being planned, those being Cruella, The Little Mermaid, Peter Pan, Pinocchio, and The Sword in the Stone, Disney has now decided to add another movie to their ever growing list of remakes, and this one might come as a surprise. Disney announced that they are planning to remake the 2002 Oscar nominated animated movie Lilo & Stitch. For those of you who may not be familiar or remember it, the story revolves around an alien named Experiment #626, Stitch, who escapes his captures called the Galactic Federation and crash lands on Earth on the island of Hawaii. Stitch then goes around passing himself off as a weird looking dog, where he eventually becomes the “pet” of a lonely island girl named Lilo.
While the movie wasn’t a box office smash, it became very popular due to its warm story telling, funny humor, and emotionally and heartfelt characters about family and friends. Lilo and Stitch became a pretty popular at one point with a spinoff tv show as well as Disney’s branding through out their parks and straight to video movies. With its Oscar nomination, it was thought as one of the best Disney movies put out in the 2000’s as many connected with the heart felt story of family or Ohana.
The remake is going to be a live action spinoff mixed with CGI effects. The movie is being produced by Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, who are also working on the Aladdin remake. It will be written by Mike Van Waes, who is also working on The Conjuring spinoff called The Crooked Man for Warner Bros. and New Line. There is currently no director attached to the movie. What will be interesting is if Disney decides to release this movie in theaters or send it straight to their new streaming service joing Lady and the Tramp and The Sword in the Stone, set to be out next year.
