First ‘Captive State’ Trailer Reveals Rupert Wyatt’s Alien Thriller

Focus Features has released the first official trailer for Captive State. Helmed by Rise of the Planet of the Apes and The Gambler director Rupert Wyatt, Captive State is set ten years after aliens conquered the planet and puts a socio-economic twist on the sci-fi thriller genre. It will explore the lives from both sides, known as “the collaborators and dissidents.”

Alien invasion movies, truthfully, have gotten a bit stale over the last decade. It’s usually the same thing over and over again, and it has just gotten boring. Luckily, Rupert Wyatt has put a very interesting twist on the genre. Aliens invade promising a better world. Humanity begins to believe and fall in line. Man fights back when they begin to realize it’s all just a big fat load of crap. I dig it, a lot.

The trailer does a pretty damn good job of keeping everything under lock and key. It’s the perfect tease, as you truly have no idea what’s going on or what’s going to happen until that moment when the mothership shows up in the sky. Suddenly, you become intrigued once again with an alien invasion movie. On the flip side, I’m crossing all possible limbs that it doesn’t fall under the usual tropes these type of movies typically do. Wyatt is responsible for relaunching the Planet of the Apes franchise, a franchise that is easily one of the best over the last decade. If he can bring those elements and vibe to this movie, he could have another great story on his hands.

Check out the first official trailer below, and make sure to head down to the comments and leave your thoughts! Are you intrigued? Is there even enough in this trailer to get excited yet? Starring John Goodman, Vera Farmiga and Ashton Sanders, Wyatt’s Captive State opens March 29, 2019.

Set in a Chicago neighborhood nearly a decade after an occupation by an extra-terrestrial force, “Captive State” explores the lives on both sides of the conflict – the collaborators and dissidents.
