Two new clips have been released for the upcoming biopic Papillon. Directed by Michael Noer, the film is based on the incredible true story of Henri “Papillon” Charrière (Charlie Hunnam), a safecracker from the Parisian underworld who is sentenced to life in the notorious penal colony on Devil’s Island after being framed for murder. Papillon is a determined man, and in his best chance for escape, he forms an unlikely bond with a convicted counterfeiter (Rami Malek) who requests nothing but protection in return.
While neither Hunnam or Malek are huge in the business (Hunnam more so), they are both making really nice names for themselves. Both getting their big break on television, the two have ever-so-slightly picked film roles that have showcased their abilities to flat-out act, and I expect no different from their roles in Papillon. The first trailer revealed some incredible footage in my opinion, which quickly shot it up my anticipated list for the rest of the year. I’m a sucker for true story films, and with Hunnam being an underrated favorite of mine, it’s no-brainer for myself.
While I am very much looking forward to the movie, I’ve seen everything I need to at this point. The first trailer gave me everything I needed to either be excited or decide to pass on it. I’m obviously aligning with the former. So while I’ve decided to not watch the following clips, please scroll down and check them out! If you haven’t seen the first trailer, watch it. This film has some incredible aspects to it and can once again show why both Hunnam and Malek are two guys who will be around this business for a long time.
What do you think of this story? How does the (second) adaptation look to you? Did the clips feature anything spoiler worthy? Please leave your thoughts in the comments! Also starring Roland Møller, Tommy Flanagan and Eve Hewson, Papillon has a limited release on August 24th.
