First Look: Disney Releases First Image of Lui Yifei as Mulan

Disney has been putting in work with their animated to live-action properties of the last few years. Cinderella was fabulous start, which was then followed by a monstrous showing from Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book. That will be followed up by The Lion King, which will again see Favreau at the helm. All three of those films are hugely popular and well known names, but Disney’s fourth animation to -live-action film may be the most significant: Mulan.

Whether or not you know the story of Mulan, it tells the truly epic adventure of a fearless young woman who pretends to be a man in order to fight invaders who are attacking her home country of China. Why? Te Emperor declares that one man per house must fight in the Imperial Army, and with her father being ill, she steps in to take his place and becomes one of China’s most greatest warriors.

This story and film is absolutely fantastic. Everything about it screams cinematic, and although the Disney animated classic is beloved by thousands, the story is truly made for the big screen. While there was early controversy over the film and the approach Disney would take, Liu Yifei (The Forbidden Kingdom, Once Upon a Time) won the role after a year-long casting search around the world. And if the first image of the film is any indication, Yifei is well up to the task.

To celebrate the beginning of production, Disney released the first official image of Yifei is costume. She looks amazing, exactly what I think we all hoped Mulan would look liken real-life. She will be joined in the film by Donnie Yen (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Jason Scott Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), Yoson An (The Meg), Utkarsh Ambudkar (Pitch Perfect), Ron Yuan (Marco Polo), Tzi Ma (Arrival), Rosalind Chao (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), Cheng Pei-Pei (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and Jet Li.

What do you think of the first image? Does Yifei look the part? Are you looking forward to seeing this tale in live-action form? Do you hope to see a retelling of the animated film or something a bit different? Directed by Niki Caro, Mulan will be released in theaters on March 27th, 2020.
