J.J. Abrams Shares First BTS Photo as ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’ Begins Filming!

As we learned last week, Star Wars: Episode IX officially started production yesterday in London at Pinewood Studios, and thanks to director J.J. Abrams and his excitement to return after directing The Force Awakens, the occasion is celebrated with the film’s first set photo.

Don’t lose your mind too much now, the photo is just a beautiful look at the cameras being used for the film, although the blurry background does seem to include John Boyega’s Finn on what could be the Millennium Falcon cockpit. Who could he be talking to? Catching up with Daisy Ridley’s Rey? Strategizing with Oscar Isaac’s Poe? Either way, it’s very exciting stuff.

The image isn’t everything the director revealed, as he also attached some heartfelt words to go along with it. On top of mentioned the late Carrie Fisher, he also thanks Rian Johnson and the godfather himself, George Lucas:

Bittersweet starting this next chapter without Carrie, but thanks to an extraordinary cast and crew, we are ready to go. Grateful for @rianjohnson and special thanks to George Lucas for creating this incredible world and beginning a story of which we are lucky to be a part. #IX

Although Star Wars has been in a weird flux over the past couple of months, this is a very exciting time. With us now getting a year and a half break from the galaxy far, far away, it will allow us to refresh and once again get unnecessarily excited to see how this saga is going to wrap up next December. That’s right, don’t forget that it was announced as “the final installment in the Skywalker saga.” That’s a mighty big task for Abrams to complete, but after his success of Episode VII and how much the cast is looking forward to reuniting with him, I have no doubt it can be done.

Abrams did an incredible job of sharing constant bts shots like this one on The Force Awakens. None of them revealed much, but they are something fun for us fans to enjoy through our year and a half wait. Check out the new photo below and let me know your thoughts in the comments! Starring Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, and Billie Lourd with newcomers Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant, Keri Russell and veterans Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Billy Dee Williams and Carrie Fisher, Star Wars: Episode IX will be released on December 20th, 2019.
