It’s happening, it’s finally happening! Earlier this year, there were reports circling the inter-webs that a possible Zombieland sequel could be in the works with original cast members Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin. It got many people excited, including myself, but now, we can all rejoice as The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that a sequel is indeed happening. And yes, the original team is returning!
Per THR, the entire original team from the first movie will be making a return. Not only will we once again be seeing Columbus, Tallahassee, Wichita and Little Rock, but original helmer Ruben Fleischer will be directing a script from original screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who have recently made a living off of the successful Deadpool franchise.
Wait, there’s more! We’ve seen many movies in the past get into this stage and never see the light of day, especially long-wanted sequels. Rumors have been swirling about this one specifically for years, but Sony means it this time, as the film will enter production at the beginning of next year for a release of October 2019. It’s just over a year away, baby!
What kind of story will they be telling though? Thanks to THR, again, here’s an idea:
“The new movie will once again put the focus on comic mayhem, taking the quartet from the White House to the American heartland as they face off against new kinds of zombies that have evolved since the first movie, as well as some new human survivors. But, most of all, according to the studio, they have to face the growing pains of their own snarky, makeshift family.”
This is the best news. I absolutely love Zombieland. Personally, it’s one of my favorite comedies because of how fun and different it is, on top of the cast being incredibly good together. And while a sequel never seemed possible because it really didn’t make a whole lot (although it crushed its budget), it’s no surprise that Sony has finally given the green-light.
The film hit cult status thanks to home video and since its release, both Eisenberg and Stone have become A-list actors, both being nominated for Oscars and Stone winning one. But let’s not forget Harrelson, who is and always will be the freaking man. Hopefully with all the working pieces back in place, they can deliver a return to the land of zombies that’s been worth the wait.
What do you think of this news? Are you a fan of the original like I am? How long have you been waiting for a sequel? Be honest, how much did you lose your mind? Sound off below!
