The Transformers franchise has fallen on hard times when it comes to its villains. While the original movie had a very nice set-up with Megatron and his decepticon minions, the movies that followed shortened the characters and went completely off the rails. While we wait for the next main series movie, director Travis Knight and his Bumblebee spinoff are looking to change that run, and thanks to Entertainment Weekly, we now have our first look and set of details on those Bee will be facing off against later this year.
As part of their massive pre San Diego Comic Con spread, which happens next week, EW has given us our first official look at the villains of Bumblebee, which are named Shatter and Dropkick. It was also revealed that Angela Basset will be voicing Shatter and Justin Theroux will be behind Dropkick, which adds some major voice talent to the film.
But when it comes to Transformers, we’re not just worried about who’s behind the alien robot, but rather what kind of car they’ll transform into. With the film being set in 1987, it allows Knight to be incredibly creative with what kind of vehicles he uses for the set. Keeping in line with Bee’s choice of a Volkswagen bug, Shatter is a red Plymouth Satellite and Dropkick is a blue AMC Javelin, which definitely adds some much needed old school flare to a franchise that has become quite dull.
The two featured villains will also be joined by a third character who can fly. Here’s what EW caught from Knight about the trio of bad guys:
“The two main villains are Decepticon muscle cars. When the cast is too big, and you have a finite amount of time, there’s only so much you can do to create an investment in them. This is a more personal, intimate, and character-driven story, so it felt right to keep the villain plot relatively simple and contained. If you keep things lean, you can add a lot of other stuff on top of it that makes it more enjoyable.”
What do you think guys? First, how do you think the villains look? Do you like what you’re hearing about the characters thus far? How about the voices behind them? Are you looking forward to this spinoff? Starring Hailee Steinfeld, John Cena, Megyn Price, Keneth Choi and John Ortiz, Knight’s Bumblebee arrives on December 21st.
