Thanks to a very determined Shane Black, the classic horror character Predator is getting a much needed update in the coming weeks. Black, of course, starred in the original Predator movie back in the late ’80s, where he really appreciated the mythology created. So much so that now, as a regarded filmmaker, he’s stepping back into the hunt with his new movie, which will reimagine not just the classic character, but the classic franchise overall.
Does a badass space hunter really need an update? No, not necessarily. But that doesn’t mean it’s not a bad thing. If this were a classic Predator or something that kept the true spirit of that original movie, than sure, but this isn’t the classic Predator. Black’s main goal has been to regenerate the franchise and the thirst for it from movie-goers everywhere. And that all began with the new look of the Predator. With the film just a matter of weeks away, Empire Magazine recently caught up with Black and asked him a few questions, where he had this to say about the new look of the creature:
“The challenge became to make it frightening,” Black told Empire. “’Cause upon that hinged everything — whether you bought our heroes going up against him and felt a real threat for them. We had to invent a scenario in which the Predators were mysterious and scary again.”
This character has taken a full overhaul, and for longtime fans, it’s no doubt a lot to take in. Through footage so far, we’ve gotten quick cuts of the overall look at the hunter, but now, thanks to Empire, we get an entire new perspective at jut how much detail Black went into updating this character. While Black has promised that this movie is a very gritty and somewhat serious entry into the franchise, it’s clear that Black wanted this character to standout.
See the new photos below and make sure to let me know your thoughts in the comments! Are you excited for this new movie? Does having Black as director give you confidence? What have you thought about the trailers? Starring Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Munn, Sterling K. Brown, Alfie Allen, Thomas Jane, Augusto Aguilera, Jake Busey and Yvonne Strahovski, The Predator arrives on Earth on September 14th.
