Idris Elba Will Go Bad in ‘Fast & Furious’ Spinoff ‘Hobbs & Shaw’

While the future of the main Fast & Furious series is a tad bit uncertain at the moment, the Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham spinoff Hobbs & Shaw is pushing forward like it just shifted up two gears. The franchise’s writer Chris Morgan is once again in charge of script duties with Atomic Blonde and Deadpool 2 director David Leitch behind the camera. Now the film, of course, can only have so much of the remarkable banter between Johnson and Statham, which is exactly where the newly casted Idris Elba comes into play.

As reported by Variety, Elba has been brought on board the spinoff to play film’s villain for Universal Pictures. Added to any film, Elba instantly brings the movie to a whole new level. But thinking about this one specifically, his villainous role will no doubt be significant and quite lethal if it requires a team-up of two of the world’s most dangerous men.

This news came just days after it was announced that Vanessa Kirby, who will be featured in the upcoming Mission: Impossible – Fallout, also joined the film as Deckard Shaw’s sister and a MI5 Agent. The high-profile Shaw family tree is continuing to grow, as there are now four of them (Luke Evans plays Owen Shaw from the sixth movie and Helen Mirren plays Mama Shaw in Furious 7. It’ll be interesting to see if one or either of them will appear in this movie.

Production on the film is set to begin this fall, which it will aim for a summer 2019 release date. What do you think of this casting? Is Elba the right choice? How much are you looking forward to the spinoff? Hobos & Shaw will ride into theaters on July 26th, 2019.
