‘Top Gun 2’ Recruits Miles Teller to Play Goose’s Son

The need for speed is alive once again! It’s been a very long time in the making, but Top Gun 2 is finally making its way down the runway. Just a few days ago brought the news that the film was in search for a young male star to portray the son of Maverick’s best friend and co-pilot, Goose (Anthony Edwards). The news not only revealed that the story would include a young protege for Maverick, but it also revealed a shortlist for role, which included Glen Powell, Nicholas Hoult and Miles Teller. Now, with the news today, we officially have a name who will be playing opposite the great Tom Cruise.

First reported by Variety, Top Gun: Maverick has officially recruited Miles Teller to play Goose’s son. This comes to no surprise. Teller had a little bit of a head start compared to the others as one of his most recent films was Joseph Kosinki’s Only the Brave, which Kosinski is directing the long-wanted Top Gun sequel.

But that’s not the only reunion, as Kosinski and Cruise will reunite after their work together on 2013’s Oblivion. But wait, there’s more! Cruise will also reunite with his on-screen rival turned wingman Val Kilmer, as he’ll be making a cheerful return to the role of Tom Kazanski aka Iceman. Now the question is whether or not they can get Meg Ryan to join the cast as Goose’s wife, and Teller’s mother if she does return. The actress has been notorious for being very picky with her roles in recent years.

Top Gun: Maverick is said to explore a pilot’s role in a world where drone technology has become the top choice and the era of dogfighting has become extinct. I could not be more excited for this movie. Top Gun is absolute classic and while a sequel may not be necessary, it’s awesome that it’s actually happening. What Tom Cruise has done with the action side of filmmaking makes me over the moon excited for the possibilities of this film. And although I had Powell as my pick for the role, Teller is no slouch. It will be very interesting to see him and Cruise on screen together.

What do you think of this news? Is Teller the right choice for the role? What about the story itself? Are you looking forward to the sequel? Top Gun: Maverick will release some time in 2019.
