Rian Johnson’s ‘Star Wars’ Trilogy Has Release Date in Sight

While Rian Johnson’s Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi was received with many mixed reviews and many either loving or hating it, Disney green lit Rian Johnson to direct his own trilogy. This again was met with positive and negative reactions but with it being a completely new trilogy, not being tied to Episode I through Episode IX, it leaves a lot more Rian Johnson & Carrie Fisher on set Star Wars: The Last Jedicreative room for Johnson to make it his own.

Star Wars has a lot going on with the recent release of Solo: A Star Wars Story and the untitled Episode IX coming out in December of 2019, people were beginning to wonder when this new trilogy was going to drop. With the recent unfortunate flop of Solo: A Star Wars Story, Disney is looking to reevaluate its release on their movies. The Last Jedi and Solo: A Star Wars Story were released only around 5-6 months apart which left many to believe that the closeness in release caused Solo to fail, causing Disney to say they were going to aim to release only one movie a year. Recently when The Last Jedi producer and frequent Rian Johnson collaborator was asked when we can expect his trilogy to kick off he said:

“It’s a completely new trilogy that writer-director Rian Johnson, my partner, is going to create. It’s all new characters. Everything is new … In two years [it may release]; it’s just in the early stages.”

Rian Johnson on set Star Wars: The Last JediTwo years from now would mean that they are aiming for a 2020 release date for the new trilogy. While there is no official word, it may just be a target date for the movie. The only problem with that is that the long time rumored Obi-Wan Kenobi movie that Disney may be secretly moving forward with, was always said to be coming in 2020 as well. If that is true and Disney sticks to the one movie a year plan, this could push the new trilogy back to 2021. While again nothing is for sure, it looks like the new trilogy is in full steam ahead regardless.
