First ‘Bad Times at the El Royale’ Promises Twists, Turns & a Damn Good Time

20th entry Fox has released the first official trailer for Bad Times at the El Royale. Written and directed by Drew Goddard, writer and director of The Cabin in the Woods, the film is set at a hotel that sits directly on state lines between California and Nevada. But while it’s fun and games to begin with picking which state you want to stay in, the story quickly unravels as the guests, all of the guests, aren’t who they say they are.

This trailer is fascinating. Goddard hasn’t directed a film since The Cabin in the Woods, and if you’ve seen that film you know how absolutely out-of-left-field it is. There are certainly elements of that project that carry directly over to this one, and boy does it work for the better. The trailer starts off in a fun and playful manner, introducing us to the hotel and its gets, but then completely shifts to a murder mystery party that features a little violence. It’s clearly straight from the mind of Goddard, and it’s just amazing. I have no idea what to expect from it now that I’ve seen it come to fruition. But luckily there is one thing, the trailer no doubt promises that it will be a raging good time at the theater.

The cast is pretty incredible as well. Chris Hemsworth is an absolute star, and we don’t see him in any footage until three-fourths of the way through it. Then you add in players like Jon Hamm, Jeff Bridges, Dakota Johnson, Cynthia Erivo, Cailee Spaeny, Nick Offerman and more around him, and like I said, a raging good time at the theater.

Check out the first official trailer below and make sure to leave your thoughts in the comments below! How did you feel after watching it? Are you in the same boat as I am? What about the cast? Are you a fan of Goddard’s previous work? Bad Times at the El Royale opens on October 5th.

Seven strangers, each with a secret to bury, meet at Lake Tahoe’s El Royale, a rundown hotel with a dark past. Over the course of one fateful night, everyone will have a last shot at redemption… before everything goes to hell. Jeff Bridges, Chris Hemsworth, Jon Hamm, Dakota Johnson and Cynthia Erivo lead an all-star cast in BAD TIMES AT THE EL ROYALE.
