Paramount has officially unveiled the first trailer to their first ever Transformers spinoff, Bumblebee. While the potential was very bright back in 2005 when Michael Bay brought us the first Transformers movie, those that followed have unfortunately dragged the franchise down to a point that fans no longer want to be a part of it. Luckily for us, after 5 movies, it looks as if the studio is finally looking to make a change and move away from the Michael Bay era of the franchise. Where did they turn? The series’ first ever spinoff, Bumblebee.
Bumblebee is without a doubt the fan favorite. Although he’s a bit on the smaller side and in the movies, anyway, lost his voice, his attachment to human characters and his fighting style/ability is the best in the franchise, at least second to Optimus Prime. Because of that, he’s the most fitting for his own movie, especially with the new revelations of his previous history on Earth via flashbacks in Transformers: The Last Knight. While his solo movie isn’t taking place in WWII, that alone allows for some very exciting elements in this new adventure that is set in the ’80s.
When it comes to this new trailer, this is definitely a different kind of Transformers flick. The look and feel of not just Bumblebee, but the overall film is clearly trying to separate itself from the Transformers movies that have come before it. While some of the action looks cool and the setting/story will no doubt be interesting, I can’t help but feel like it’s the most kid friendly entry into this franchise. I don’t know if it’s the look of Bumblebee or something else entirely, but it doesn’t feel as blockbuster-y as I hoped it would after a first trailer. Luckily, it is just a first trailer, so here’s to hoping a future one can change my mind!
