‘Spider-Man: Homecoming 2’ Adds Jake Gyllenhaal as Villain Mysterio; Michael Keaton to Return as Vulture

While the ending of Avengers: Infinity War points to end for many of Marvel’s characters, if you dig deep into already revealed release dates, you can see that one character already has a sequel in the works. The next chapter of Peter Parker’s MCU adventure continues next summer, and with Infinity War officially in the books, that means the pre-production process for the sequel has begun. What comes first? Well, thanks to some amazing Monday morning news, a casting and villain announcement.

Geeks everywhere have been speculating and debating as to who the next foe Parker will face off against, with names like Kraven the Hunter and Doc Ock being two of the more popular. Well, it’s now official, and it’s neither of them. First reported by The Hollywood Reporter, they have revealed that Jake Gyllenhaal, yes Jake Gyllenhaal is in talks / casted as the very popular villain Mysterio.

Before I get to my complete and utter excitement over this addition, it’s a pretty funny piece of casting. Before Gyllenhaal went on his binge of fantastic roles and best-of-the-year contending performances, he was actually in the running to play Spider-Man. Now rather be the teenage wall-crawler, he’ll be countering him as a villain fans have been begging for for years. It’s also worth noting that his name has popped up in comic book projects for years, with director Matt Reeves even claiming that he wrote his script for The Batman for Gyllenhaal specifically. While it could still happen, it’s very unlikely with the villainous Sinister Six on the horizon.

Another big of news dropped for this project, which will have relevance to the bad guy team I just mentioned. Variety has revealed that Michael Keaton, who played villain The Vulture in the first movie and was left alive and in prison at the end, will be returning to the role in the sequel. This no doubt unofficially confirms Marvel and Sony’s plan to bring the Sinister Six to the big screen, with The Vulture, Scorpion and now Mysterio all in the universe.

This is one of the rare castings that no fan anywhere can complain about. In my opinion, Gyllenhaal is the best working actor by a long shot, with his incredibly wide range talent being put on display year after year with whatever roles he chooses. Whatever the write up for him, I have no doubt he’ll knock it far out of the park.

Another interesting question is whether or not he’ll be the single villain or possible a team-up with another. Many comic book movie has used multiple villains very well as of late, with Homecoming having both Shockers and The Tnkerer us great supporting roles. But with a high-caliber talent like Gyllenhaal in the role and the Sinister Six coming, it might be best for the sequel to let Mysterio be the single villain, especially since the character will be the most powerful villain Spidey has gone up against by himself to this point (yes, Infinity War, I know).

All-in-all, this is a fantastic grab for Marvel and Sony. Just think, no matter how big or small Keaton’s role is, we’re going to be seeing Tom Holland, Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Keaton all in the same comic book movie. What do you think of this casting? Are you happy Mysterio is the next villain? Is Gyllenhaal the perfect choice? How about Keaton returning? Sound off below! Directed by Jon Watts, the untitled Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel is set for a July 5th, 2019 release.
