While comic book movies were once considered the bottom of the barrel for actors and actresses, as they were portrayed as roles that didn’t require a whole lot of, well, acting, that’s definitely not the case anymore. Christian Bale was the beginning in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy, which was then followed by Marvel’s first major casting in Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark. Since then we’ve seen dozens of up-and-coming talents and Oscar-nominated/winning actors and actresses join the ranks of superheroes, and that has only continued with Marvel’s latest grab for Captain Marvel.
Marvel has had a few films that feature ridiculously talented casts; the latter two Captain America films, Doctor Strange and, of course, Avengers: Infinity War. With all the talent inside the MCU already, it’s hard to believe they can grab anymore. That’s where I was wrong. As first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel has locked down that fantastic Annette Bening for their next major superhero reveal, Captain Marvel. She joins an already stellar cast, which is led by Brie Larson, who will be Marvel’s first female headliner as Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, a military pilot who becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes after being infused with the DNA of a powerful alien race.
Many sites have thrown out their ideas or speculations as to who Bening will be playing, but I believe Variety nailed it right on the head when saying she’ll be playing Danvers’ mother, a chief scientists. If that does happen to be the case, Bening could be in the role that Michael Douglass played in Ant-Man, and also looks to be playing in the sequel. While we have seen a few top-notch actors go one-and-done (Robert Redford, Michael Keaton), hopefully this character is a recurring one as Bening is one of the best talents working today.
As I mentioned earlier, the incredible cast that she’ll be joining also includes Jude Law (Marv-Ell), Ben Mendelsohn, Gemma Chan and Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury. They will also be joined by a few faces of MCU past, characters we’ve seen come-and go throughout the universe; Lee Pace’s Ronan and Djimon Honshu’s Korath from Guardians of the Galaxy, as well as Agent Phil Coulson as S.H.I.E.L.D., Clark Gregg. You’re probably asking yourself how exactly. Well, that’s all thanks to the film being a MCU prequel. While Captain America: The First Avenger will always be the earliest film in the franchise, Captain Marvel will be set in the 1990s, which will allow us as viewers to see a world before superheroes.
When it comes to the casting of Annette Bening, what are your thoughts on the addition? Who do you think she’ll play? How about the cast and film overall? Share your excitement below! Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Captain Marvel will arrive in theaters on March 8th, 2019.
