The first full official trailer for Crazy, Rich, Asians dropped today and by the looks of it its got the typical Rom-Com type feel that people tend to fall for. The all asian cast gives us a fresh play on your typical mainstream romantic comedy feel. The film itself comes from the best selling book with the same name which was written by author Kevin Kwan. He has said that the book was inspired by his desire to “introduce a contemporary Asia to a North American audience.” The movie itself looks like a mix of Monster-in-Law with a splash of The Notebook when it comes to its storyline of “the rich character falling in love with the average joe.”
The story follows native New Yorker Rachel Chu as she accompanies her longtime boyfriend, Nick Young, to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore. Excited about visiting Asia for the first time but nervous about meeting Nick’s family, Rachel is unprepared to learn that Nick has neglected to mention a few key details about his life. It turns out that he is not only the scion of one of the country’s wealthiest families but also one of its most sought-after bachelors. Being on Nick’s arm puts a target on Rachel’s back, with jealous socialites and, worse, Nick’s own disapproving mother taking aim. And it soon becomes clear that while money can’t buy love, it can definitely complicate things.
The movie is directed by Jon M. Chu and has a pretty big cast. Rachel Chu will be played by Constance Wu known from the TV Show Fresh Off The Boat. Nick Young will be played by Henry Goulding, while Michelle Yeoh known for her roles on Star Trek: Discovery and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, will play the overbearing mother-in-law. Rounding out the cast is Gemma Chan, Awkwafina and Ken Jeong. The movie looks like a fun time with an enjoyable cast and decent story. Crazy, Rich, Asians hits theaters August 17th.
