Atomic Blonde was one of the best pure action 2017 had to offer. Not only that, but Charlize Theron has become one of the best actor choices, male or female, to play an action hero. Okay, maybe she wasn’t as much a hero as others, but we were still rooting for her. Anyway, it was unclear at the time whether or not the movie was a one-off or a movie that would spin into a franchise. But with the success of something like John Wick and just how good the movie was in general, it’s a no-brainer that a sequel would eventually come. Well, according to Charlize Theron herself, a sequel is indeed coming.
The SF Film Festival just wrapped up this past weekend in San Francisco, Theron was discussing the rigorous work that went in to creating those amazing action sequences. While on the topic, she mentioned how her mother asked her if it was all really worth all the incredible work she had to do. Turns out, it was, as Theron revealed the following: “We’re working on a sequel.” YEEEES.
This doesn’t come to much surprise as the movie was a hit with audiences, mainly due to its brutal and violent nature. While the movie was making its rounds last year and the crew was on press tour, director David Leitch and sent coordinator Sam Hargrave said they were thinking about take Lorainne into the ’90s next. They seemed quite confident that the character would return, as Leitch had this to say about a sequel: “there’s a lot of people that are already buzzing about, ‘Hey, we should do it, we want to see the character again.’ Lorraine Broughton is a really compelling, fun character. There’s a lot of wish fulfillment in her, for both men and women.”
I’m ecstatic about this news. I completely and fully enjoyed Atomic Blonde from start to finish. I’m not set in stone on this, but I may even enjoy it a little bit more than John Wick became Lorainne is such a compelling character and Theron is one of my favorite working actresses today. As I mentioned earlier, it’s no-brainer for me that we’ll be seeing a sequel, the movie crushed, along the lines of the first John Wick. And if it keeps in line with that franchise, the sequel will go much bigger and have wildly more success than the original. I can’t wait to see Theron back in the most violent way possible.
What do you think about this news? Were you a fan of the first? Are you happy to hear that a sequel is in the works? Do you hope they crossover the John Wick and Atomic Blonde franchises? Sound off in the comments below!
