Ranking the MCU: The Road to ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ – #13

13. Doctor Strange

In October of 2016 we were introduced to one of the newest Marvel Cinematic Universe characters with Doctor Strange. The title role of Dr. Stephen Strange was played by Benedict Cumberbatch.Rachel McAdams played Christine Palmer, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Karl Mordo, Benedict Wong as Wong, Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One, and Mads Mikkelsen as Kaecilius.

The movie begins in Kathmandu, Nepal where the sorcerer Kaecilius and his zealots enter the secret compound Kamar-Taj in order to steal pages from a book belonging to the Ancient One who is a long lived sorcerer who teaches sorcerers including Kaecilius. The Ancient One pursues them but they escape.

In New York City, Stephen Strange, a wealthy and acclaimed but arrogant neurosurgeon, severely injures his hands in a car accident, leaving him unable to operate. Christine Rachel McAdams & Benedict Cumberbatch in Doctor StrangePalmer former lover and friend helps him in his recovery but Strange tries to find other, quicker means of a cure costing him his fortune. Strange then learns of a paraplegic man who mysterious regains the ability to walk. The man directs Strange to Kamar-Taj, where he is taken in by Baron Mordo, a sorcerer under the Ancient One. The Ancient One demonstrates her power to Strange, revealing the astral plane and other dimensions such as the Mirror Dimension. She hesitantly agrees to train Strange because of his resemblance to Kaecilius.

Strange studies the arts through Mordo and the Ancient One and their large collection of ancient books where he meets Master Wong, who is now the librarian. Strange learns the world is protected by three buildings in New York, Hong Kong, and London, that generate a shield to protect Earth and can all be reached through Kamar-Taj. Strange learns very quickly and learns from the text that Kaecilius stole, learning to bend time with the mystical Eye of Agamotto. Mordo and Wong warn Strange against breaking the laws of nature, which is what Kaecilius tried to do, learning to create eternal life.

Kaecilius then uses the pages to contact Dormammu of the Dark Dimension, where time does not exist. Kaecilius destroys the London sanctuary while the zealots attack the New Doctor StrangeYork sanctum but are held of by Dr. Strange and later Baron Mordo and the Ancient One. Kaecilius then reveals that the Ancient One has lived so long due to the fact that she draws power from the Dark Dimension. The Ancient One is then stabbed by Kaecilius mortally wounding her and escapes to Hong Kong. Strange and Mordo arrive in Hong Kong to find Wong dead, the sanctum destroyed and the Dark Dimension opened. Dr. Strange uses the Eye of Agamotto to reverse time to save Wong, then enters the Dark Dimension and creates a time loop around himself and Dormammu. Dormammu repeatedly kills Strange over and over but it never ends. Dormammu finally gives in to Strange’s demand that he leave Earth and take Kaecilius and his zealots with him in return for Strange breaking the loop.

Upset by Dr. Strange and the Ancient One’s reckless care for the rules, Mordo departs. Strange returns the Eye to Kamar-Taj, and decides to stay in the New York Sanctum. In adoctor_strange_ver3_xlg
mid-credits scene, Strange decides to help Thor, who has brought his brother Loki to Earth in search of their father Odin. In the post-credits scene, Mordo confronts the paraplegic man and steals the mystical energy that he uses to walk, declaring that Earth has “too many sorcerers”.

Doctor Strange was definitely one of the most unique Marvel movies that we have seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It brought bright colors, trippy imagery and mind bending realities. While it was received with mixed emotion, its importance was to set up the future of the MCU. It drew connection to other movies such as Ant-Man with it’s use of the Quantum Realm. It brought Magic into the MCU. As well as another infinity stone which many believe will be very important when Thanos comes to town. It was definitely a new type of comic book movie which drew similarities to movies like Inception with their mind bending realities. It was a eye pleasing movie with a great cast and definitely deserves a sequel.
