As promised, Disney and Lucasfilm unveiled the brand new trailer for Solo: A Star Wars Story last night, and boy oh boy were we treated to something special. Directed by Ron Howard, the Han Solo spinoff follows the young smuggler through through a series of daring events where he befriends his future co-pilot Chewbacca and meets the legendary gambler Lando Calrissian, among others, in a journey that will set the path for one of Star Wars‘ most popular characters.
I think we can all join in and agree that any kind of bad taste or hesitancy we may have had towards this film from the production drama that happened early last year is officially washed away. This is a trailer. If this were a trailer for any other Star Wars movie, we’d all be in an uproar, claiming that it shows way too much. First of all, we won’t know how much it really shows until the movie is released. Duh. Secondly, this spinoff has had one big mountain to climb, so much so that fans everywhere are questioning a Star Wars movie. Who would’ve thought? What I’m getting at is that they had no choice but to show this because this footage has won over a hell of a lot more fans than it has pushed them away. That’s a win.
Everything in this trailer looks fantastic. The tone is one thing that stands above them all. Ron Howard, who basically reshot the entire movie from scratch, seems to have captured not just the essence of Solo, but the world he operates in as well. We were promised a western way back when this movie was announced, and I completely feel that in this trailer. Han feels like an outlaw, and outlaw who can’t be touched. That also goes for everything else going on around him, from the supporting characters played by Donald Glover, Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson and Thandie Newton to the incredible looking action and perfectly timed one-liners. I’m sold at this point. I feel like we’ll be getting the movie the scruffy looking nerf-herder deserves.
