The first trailer for STX Entertainment’s Adrift has now been released online. Directed by Balthasar Kormákur and based on a true story, Adrift follows a young woman, played by Shailene Woodley, and man, played by Sam Claflin, whose encounter leads to unexpected love and adventure. As the two set out for a journey of a lifetime, they didn’t realize they’re sailing directly into the heart of one of the most deadliest hurricanes ever recorded.
First of all, the fact that this actually happened to someone is remarkable. I couldn’t even begin to think about the odds they were up against while facing death day after day. As for the trailer, it’s pretty chilling, in a good way. I’m a sucker for films and stories that are about facing the odds and persevering through any obstacle, and that’s no different here.
Shailene Woodley is one of the bright young stars in the business, even against a somewhat shaky filmography. When given a role and story that demands the best, she’s never not delivered. Sam Claflin is known for his work on The Hunger Games franchise as Finnick, but again, given a role that requires real work, he hasn’t disappointed in my opinion. I’m hoping the trailer didn’t give much away, but you can never be sure these days. It looks like a solid open sea drama that should either bring tears of joy or sadness by the end. Hopefully it’s the former.

The movie is based on the true story of a woman and her fiance who, after setting sail from Tahiti, find themselves in the middle of a massive hurricane. After being knocked unconscious, the woman finds her boat in ruins and her fiance missing, now lost at sea. The rest of the story follows her 1,500 mile journey back to Hawaii while battling the elements.
