Universal Pictures way-too-long overdue sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim is now just a few weeks away, and unfortunately its marketing has been kicked up a notch or two too high. Directed by Steven S. DeKnight, Uprising is set years after the events of the original and follows Jake Pentecost, son of Stacker Pentecost, who is brought back into the world of giant fighting robots and monsters. After being reunited with his sister Mako Mori, the two lead a new generation of jaeger pilots against a new wave of massive Kaiju threats.
As I quickly mentioned above, the marketing for this movie has gotten a bit out-of-hand. I was cool with a trailer or two, maybe three since I didn’t watch it, but now the marketing has set its sight on official clips, with the latest spoiling a potential badass scene.
The trailers thus far have teased “one of their own” going dark in the movie, further teasing a Jaeger vs Jaeger showdown. The movie definitely promises that there will be more than one of those battles happening, but sadly, one of those is spoiled in the latest clip. I haven’t watched the footage myself, and I won’t, but it’s just unfortunate that marketers have to result to revealing a clip with the title “Jaeger vs Jaeger Fight Scene” on it. How awesome would it have been to find that out while watching the actual movie rather than on the computer two weeks before? I know I would’ve been happy.
Anyway, a batch of new clips have been revealed for the sequel. As always, it’s your choice whether or not you decide to watch them, but hopefully they don’t spoil anything major further. Directed by Steven S. DeKnight and starring John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, Tian Jing, Rinko Kikuchi, Burn Gorman and Charlie Day, Pacific Rim: Uprising will hit theaters on March 23rd.
John Boyega stars as the rebellious Jake Pentecost, a once-promising Jaeger pilot whose legendary father gave his life to secure humanity’s victory against the monstrous “Kaiju.” Jake has since abandoned his training only to become caught up in a criminal underworld. But when an even more unstoppable threat is unleashed to tear through our cities and bring the world to its knees, he is given one last chance to live up to his father’s legacy by his estranged sister, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi)—who is leading a brave new generation of pilots that have grown up in the shadow of war. As they seek justice for the fallen, their only hope is to unite together in a global uprising against the forces of extinction.
Jake is joined by gifted rival pilot Lambert (Scott Eastwood) and 15-year-old Jaeger hacker Amara (Cailee Spaeny), as the heroes of the PPDC become the only family he has left. Rising up to become the most powerful defense force to ever walk the earth, they will set course for a spectacular all-new adventure on a towering scale.
