As promised yesterday, Lucasfilm unveiled the first, full-length trailer for their second ever Star Wars spinoff, Solo: A Star Wars Story. Directed by Ron Howard and starring Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover, Emilia Clarke and Woody Harrelson, the film focuses on a younger Han and will story how Han became Han, in a very different kind of Star Wars.
It’s well documented the issues this film went through in production. First it had a major director swap with only weeks left in filming, then rumors were circulating that the actor they chose to take over as young Han Solo actually couldn’t act. Were those true? We can’t be too sure just yet, but from what I can see in this first trailer, I don’t completely oppose him as the younger version. I’ve been questioning the decision of Ehrenreich from the beginning, but almost instantly became mildly sold by the last scene from the trailer. While their aren’t any charismatic Harrison Ford moments or facial expressions, remember, this ins’t Ford’s Solo, this is something completely new and I think the guy (Ehrenreich) needs to be given a shot rather than being bashed months before its actual release. Just saying.
As for the trailer itself, I very much like what I’m seeing in the sense of the world it’s trying to to set up. Just as with Rogue One, this isn’t the saga galaxy we’ve been following for decades. While it takes place very much in the same time and realm, it’s distinctly different from those movies. We aren’t following the Rebels against the Empire here. Sure, they’ll be in the film in one way or another, but we’ll be seeing the dirty underworld of the Star Wars universe. And to be completely honest, it looks like a pretty dang good time to me. While I would’ve loved to have seen a Phil Lord and Chris Miller Han Solo movie, I think bringing in Ron Howard was the best possible decision they could have made. With a pretty short time period, he seems to have captured a pretty cool side of the galaxy far, far away.
Check out the first full-length trailer below. Don’t forget to leave your thoughts in the comments below! Do you feel similar to me? Is there something you don’t like? How does Ehrenreich look as young Han? Sound off as always! Solo: A Star Wars Story is slated for Memorial Day weekend on May 25th.
