Netflix has released the first official trailer for Mute, the new sci-fi mystery film from Duncan Jones. Jones, who is known for Moon, Source Code and Warcraft, takes a step back into the realm of comfortability with Mute, as it’s a film that he’s personally been trying to get off the ground for quite some time now. Set in future Berlin, the film stars Alexander Skarsgard as a mute bartender who is on a mission to find his missing girlfriend, and accompanied by two American surgeons (Paul Rudd and Justin Theroux).
I’ve been keeping an eye on this project for months now. The first official look for it arrived way early last year, which at the time, left me wanting to see more or even a first trailer. Sadly, they made us wait until early 2018, and while it was a painful wait, the footage is fantastic. If you’ve seen either Moon or Source Code, you can understand why I’m so excited for this film. Warcraft shouldn’t ever tarnish Jones’ work as a filmmaker, as that film had way too much going on from too many people. So if you really look at Jones’ work, he’s knocked it all out of the park. Source Code is just a great mystery thriller and Moon, Moon is one of the greatest films of the last decade in my opinion.
As for the cast, it’s a very interesting round-up. Skarsgard, Rudd and Theroux all bring something completely different, and now that I know the three of them will essentially be working together interests me a hell of a whole lot, especially since Rudd is playing a character named Cactus Bill. It’ll also be interesting to watch a film where the lead character doesn’t speak a single world, which will be the second in two years after Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water this last year.
Check out the first trailer for the movie below, and make sure to head down to the comments and leave your thoughts. Does it look interesting? Do you like the more drama side of the film? Are you a fan of Duncan Jones as a director? Jones’ Mute will be released on Netflix on February 23rd.
The film is set in Berlin, 40 years from today. A roiling city of immigrants, where East crashes against West in a science-fiction Casablanca. Follows Leo Beiler (Alexander Skarsgard), a mute bartender, and an odd pair of American surgeons (led by Paul Rudd) who try to help find Beiler’s lost girlfriend.
