Universal Pictures, as promised, has released the second official trailer for their upcoming monster sequel Pacific Rim: Uprising. Set years after the original events, Uprising follows Jake Pentecost, son of Stacker Pentecost, who is brought back into the world of giant fighting robots and monsters. Reunited with sister Mako Mori, the two lead a new generation of jaeger pilots against a new wave of Kaiju threats.
While I’m very much looking forward to finally seeing this sequel, and when I say finally I mean 5 years too long finally, there are aspects of this new story that have me leveling my expectations a bit. What I loved about the original from director Guillermo del Toro is the underworld feeling it had. It had this tone and feeling that only del Toro could capture with this specific movie. So when I saw the first footage for Uprising, it’s safe to say I was very surprised at how it looked, so much so that I was a bit bummed from what I saw. Then I got to thinking, this isn’t a del Toro movie anymore, it’s something completely new and different. Sure, his name is on it because he created it, but this a Steven S. DeKnight movie and that’s what I need to be looking forward to.
Are there a few cheesy one-liners or too much color in certain shots? No doubt. But as far as robots fighting monsters go, it definitely looks like it’s going to deliver. The action sequences look awesome and the movie in general looks like it’s tapping out completely on everything. I like John Boyega, I like Scott Eastwood and I like DeKnight, I’m just hoping it’s not a happy-go-lucky movie with a bit of cheese on the side. If it’s able to capture what the first was, yet build on it and be something fresh, I think I’ll be satisfied.
