Sony Pictures has revealed the first official trailer for their new animated superhero film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Although Tom Holland is slinging webs as Peter Parker for Sony and Marvel inside the MCU, Sony has showed no signs of relying on just that as their only Spider-Man property. Venom is currently filming with Tom Hardy playing Eddie Brock and now, we get our first look at the big screen debut for the second most popular Spider-Man, Miles Morales.
When you think of an animated superhero movie, the first thought that comes to mind is a kid flick, but Into the Spider-Verse looks much more than that. Sony looks to be putting all of their resources not just in front of the camera, but behind it as well. Voice talent includes Mahershala Ali and Liev Schreiber, as well as having Phil Lord and Chris Miller serving as producers, with Lord even getting a writing credit. With two Peter Parker universes previously going down in flames, it seems Sony is all in for an animated Miles Morales universe.
As for the trailer, it actually looks much better than anyone would’ve thought. The trailer blew up within minutes, and for good reason. It’ll be interesting to see how the film is received since about 95% of the audiences only know Peter Parker as the teenage web-slinger. But as the trailer reveals, this is after the wake of Parker’s death (weren’t meant to believe anyway), so audiences already know that this is a much different kind of story. I’m very interested in the way Sony handles this property. Are they planning a larger animated universe with this character or just waiting to see how it’s received? Hopefully it’s the latter as the former has gotten the studio in trouble twice before.
